This paper examines the Burwell essay on life in Belarus through the lens of Nel Noddings concept of care ethics. Discussion Noddings essay is scholarly and difficult. She also has a maddening way of not coming to the point quickly, as well as using "weasel words" so she can finally make that point without really committing herself to it or presenting facts to back it up. When she says, for example, "It seems to me that the view I shall try to present would be badly distorted if it were presented in what I have referred to as the language of the father," she is "weaseling" by using the words "seems," "shall try to," "would" and "if it were" (Noddings 2). What she means is that she is about to give her opinion as fact and she knows it. Her opinion is that ethics can be approached either as a matter of law or, for want of a better word, as a way of feeling; she sees these approaches as inherently masculine and feminine (Noddings). This dichotomy between the way men and women supposedly approach caring has drawn criticism, particularly as she has proven to have a great deal of influence on the nursing profession (Bradshaw). Bradshaw argues that Noddings concept of caring is flawed and that it perpetuates gender stereotypes of the analytical, cool-thinking male and the emotionally charged ...
