Heart disease or cardiovascular disease is a term that refers to any of a wide range of heart conditions that result from arterial blockages that prevent the free and
continuous flow of blood to the heart and other vital organs. Coronary heart disease is the most common form of cardiovascular disease, and occurs when the blood vessels feeding
the heart become narrower as a result of a build up of arterial plaque (CDC, 2007). The development of this plaque, which is essentially a build up of fats,
cholesterol and other lipids, not only threaten the health of the arteries in which they form, but also can be potentially life threatening if they successfully block the flow of
blood to the heart (CDC, 2007). A number of behaviors and conditions aggravate the potential for individuals to suffer cardiovascular disease,
not the least of which includes smoking, diabetes, age, body mass, sedentary lifestyle, hypertension and total cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association (2007), nearly four hundred eighty-four thousand
women lost their lives to cardiovascular disease and approximately six million living with coronary heart disease in 2003. For men, the number of those who have died nearly doubles.
One of nearly every three women who die are victims of cardiovascular disease, with fourteen percent more women dying of coronary heart disease over their male counterparts (sixty-four
and fifty percent, respectively) when neither group had any previous symptoms (American Heart Association, 2007). Women under age seventy-five are more likely to have issues with congestive heart failure
