Our understanding of heart disease has progressed tremendously in the last several decades. Once recognized only in the event of a heart attack, heart disease was viewed as the
product of a weak heart. There was no understanding of the multitude of causes which can ultimately be associated with a heart attack. Heart disease, and the heart
attack which made the existence of the disease apparent, was viewed as the response to a weak heart. Not only has our knowledge of the causes and symptoms of
heart disease increased, so too has our knowledge on how to treat the condition and to rehabilitate those who have suffered from heart attacks.
The progression of medical science over the last several decades has been fast-paced to say the least. Indeed, even during the last three years our ideas
of what causes heart disease have practically been turned on end. The predominant belief regarding the causative factors of the largest number of heart attacks is that heart disease
is associated with the wide scale accumulation of gunk in the walls of the arteries which narrow the blood channels and eventually choke off the flow of blood entirely, starving
the heart muscle to death. We now know a diversity of problems related to heart disease. Cardiomyopathy is one of the more frequent types of heart problems.
