has always maintained that Wolsey was the son of a simple butcher, but there is no factual basis to bear this out."1 In the year 1498 he became a priest.
He obtained many different church posts and later became the chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury who was, at the time, Henry Dean.2 In 1503 he was appointed the chaplain
to Sir Richard Nanfan and it was with this post that he became a national power. Through this powerful position and recognition he was ultimately introduced to King Henry VII
and later became all but the right hand man of King Henry VIII. King Henry VIII gave Wolsey the title of "royal almoner, and shortly after, a canon of Windsor,
then registrar of the Order of the Garter."3 Through such a powerful position he quickly became a man who took advantage of his wealth and prestige. He was able to
live lavishly and was quite renown for his tendency to show off what he owned and his power, even having a palace built for him next to the Thames.4 "He
built a superb palace beside the Thames at Richmond, called Hampton Court (later Hampton Court Palace)." This author notes that "His power was so great, and his influence over Henrys
policies so great that Wolsey was in some ways more king than the king himself!"5 Another author further supports this perspective in stating, "The costly splendor of his palaces, his
gold and silver plate, and his New Years gifts outshone those of kings."6 While he possessed this power it seems that the people of the land did not like
Wolsey, nor did the nobility who were jealous of the power he possessed. The common people were angry for his imposing new taxes and they did not appreciate his arrogant
