Baroque period. Their styles and work were incredibly rich with color and detail, often possessing elements of mythology or religion. They are also two painters who were considered quite unique in their time as well, creating change in the world of art. The following paper examines Caravaggios The Seven Acts of Mercy and then examines Rubens Head of Medusa. The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two. Caravaggios The Seven Acts of Mercy "The most original painter of the seventeenth century, Caravaggio injected new life into Italian painting after the sterile artificiality of Mannerism."1 The painting under discussion is one of his later works, works that arose after an incident that Caravaggio was violently involved in. In 1606 he and another man had an argument over a tennis match and Caravaggio killed the man with a sword.2 At this point he fled to Rome.3 The Seven Acts of Mercy was painted in 1607. Many believe his later works to be some of his most intriguing and powerful Lacayo notes that he "managed to sustain and even deepen his intuitions about light, shadow and pictorial drama" and that his later works, while he was running from his crime, were perhaps the most powerful.4 In this work it became obvious that he was dismissing the particular principles of the Renaissance. His work utilized average people as models: "[H]is come-hither boys dressed as pagan gods have dirty fingernails, his saints have calloused feet and sunburn.
