It could be asserted that the changing attitudes towards the role of women in society, as exemplified by the writings of Defoe, Centlivre
and Behn, reflected significant changes not only in the way that women perceived themselves but also in the way that society was gradually coming to accept some degree of female
autonomy, both economically and politically. In Defoes Roxana, for example, the female protagonist can be seen as an example of all that is abhorred by society in both men and
women; she has made her fortune from deceit, cheating and whoring and it must be assumed that these are generally seen, from an ethical point of view, as immoral activities.
However, it is clear that despite
her protestations of reform, Roxana does not regret in the slightest the amount of income which she has garnered over the years as a result of her immoral practices. In
a sense, she has an eminently sensible attitude to the concepts of supply and demand, market forces and returns on investment, even though these are applied not to manufacturing industry
but to her own body and her quick-witted mentality.
