be waged that both men actually could have believed that industrialization was a positive development. The reason for this seeming contradiction is that while Marx and Engels did not see
capitalism as a good end, they saw it as necessary to ultimately effect communism. To understand this, one has to understand Marxs theory of dialectical materialism and the fact that
he looked at the big picture. It should also be noted that in Marxs dialectical materialism, there is a notion that as
man goes forward, he will progress through different stages that would culminate in communism. Communism would be preceded by socialism. To get to the socialism stage, the state would have
had to get through capitalism, the stage where wealth is created. Despite the fact that Marx saw capitalism as a stepping-stone, he despised it as an end unto itself. Associating
capitalism with greed, he sees a lot of things that would negatively affect society. Macrone and Lulevitch explain it this way: " The materialist dialectic is about the gradual and
regular march from oppression to liberty, from feudalism to communism, and capitalism is a necessary stop along this path" (213). The system of
capitalism that is seen as a necessary end may be equated with the Industrial Revolution, but of course they are two different things. The industrial revolution represents a period of
time when industry was growing and altered things in its path. It would see the development of cities and people moving from rural areas to the cities in order to
