democracy. Yet they do not see it and are incapable of changing it. The student may want to state that the sickness in
a nation, according to Alexis De Tocqueville in Democracy in America, comes from promoting individuality to the injury of the whole. The individual in a democratic society is "extremely eager
in the pursuit of actual and physical gratification" (De Tocqueville 167). This person is to be pitied because he thinks of nothing beyond changing his fortune, and to the gratification
of the body over the mind and over morality (De Tocqueville 167). As such, the "empire" of democratic states is placed into the hands of "a populace carrying out its
own impulses, which is very dangerous" (De Tocqueville 129). From this, De Tocqueville foresaw the eventual downfall of the democratic state. Thoreau supported
this same concept when writing about the time he spent in jail for tax evasion on civil disobedience, not because the State of Massachusetts had arrested him, which he saw
as a perfectly legal act, but because the State was made up of "neighobours," who in private conversations with him said they supported the abolition of slavery, but would not
express that opinion to anyone in power, such as the state. In other words, individuals would not jeopardise their personal economy (for their families) for the betterment of all.
