are leading the best way of life. They attribute the goodies, and the happiness, to capitalism. Yet, capitalism is by no means a buzzword of the 2000s. In fact, Briggs
said in 1999, that the term capitalism has all but disappeared from public discussions (Briggs 473). He contends that while there is a great deal of discussion about "the
market" there is not much talk about the actual state of capitalism (473). Briggs makes the point that it is capitalism as the economic system which defines "the
market," and it is the policies and institutions of such countries which shape the world market (Briggs 473). Although the media has stopped talking about it, most Americans have learned
about the system at one time or another. While many people in the U.S. are taught by schools, media and their parents that capitalism is the best system, one wonders
how much is propaganda and how much is reality. In fact, the government sends mixed messages. For example, while politicians say they support capitalism they cater to the fears of
the people, the jealousies, and create a chasm between the "haves" and "have nots" much like Karl Marx did when he preached the values of communism. What is capitalism
exactly? Capitalism is an economic system whereby private ownership exists and the people possess their own natural resources and capital goods (McLeish 100). For example, things such as rent, interest
and profit are given to private people who are owners; they effectively decide how to use their own natural resources and goods (100). While the concept is accepted theoretically, a
