In order to assess the relevance of Marx account of the
relationship between capital and labour in the light of contemporary developments it would be useful for the student to look at the way in which Marx defined these terms and
whether his analysis of the way in which the socio-economic structure of society was expected to develop has proved accurate. For instance, the student could consider how Marx defined commodities
in relation to a capitalist society.
He considered that the term referred to anything which was produced with the intention of selling it, and that capitalism was a kind of commercially-motivated society
in which virtually everything that was produced could be classed as a commodity. In a capitalist economy there were a small number of people who owned the means of production
- namely the raw materials, the tools and equipment necessary to produce commodities, and the finished product itself. There was also a large group of workers who contributed the actual
labour and were paid by the owners, but did not have any share in the profits or ownership in the finished commodities; their only source of income was a wage,
the level of which was dictated by the capitalist owners.
