Many risks cannot be controlled but a business will have choices concerning risks. When it comes to new investments or the assessment of ongoing projects companies need to assess risks that are faced and the extent of those risks in order to determine whether they which to face those risks. It is also only with a full assessment of the risk and the potential return that an informed decisions regarding the investment may be made. Where unnecessary risk is taken on the result may be favourable, but there could also be disaster for the owners or shareholders. One example of a poor decisions making structure leading to the acceptance of unnecessary risk is the example of Barings Bank. This resulted in the failure of the bank and the risks taken by one member of staff brought the company down due to financial risks (Giddens, 1999). By understand the link between performance and the use of risk assessment a study could be useful to both businesses and investors. For this we will assume the research is for an investment house which wants to consider the criteria on which they assess potential investments.
