This 28 page paper evaluates views on capital punishment as it respect people of various religious backgrounds. Although many religions are mentioned, the paper focuses on Protestantism and Catholicism as practiced in the United States. The history of the church in respect to support and opposition of capital punishment is discussed as well as official positions of various churches. Studies are quoted from a variety of sources to demonstrate the public's view of the death penalty. The paper evaluates the differences between the positions of those who are Protestant and those who are Catholic. Various sects of Protestantism are discussed. Bibliography lists 20 sources.

their opposition to capital punishment does not mean they will be excused from the case. This places some people in a predicament. Christians who do not want to participate in
such cases do have a moral dilemma. Should they bring in the proper verdict that they swore on a bible they would, or should they throw the case? Is
jury nullification justified in such a situation? Other dilemmas come forth. Can any politician who governs a state that supports the death penalty be considered moral if he is also
Catholic? Some politicians try to separate their public from religious life, but is that not a contradiction? Finally, it is assumed that all Christians would oppose the death penalty, but
that is not necessarily the case. There is another perception, which is that all Catholics disfavor the death penalty. While many Catholics are opposed to the taking of human life
in any situation, the issue is not black and white. It is in fact rather complex and in order to properly explore the topic, some history is in order. How
has the death penalty been treated in Christian religions, particularly among the Protestant sects and in Roman Catholicism? Of course, the Catholic religion had sprung from Judaism and from there,
the Protestant Reformation would create a new, less extreme version of Christianity. In Judaism, the Torah does state that there does exist crimes that deserve the ultimate punishment, but the
tradition also clearly points out that death should be elicited under only the most dire circumstances ("Capital Punishment- A Jewish"). Such restrictions include the idea that there must be
