a time, it would seem, when individual citizens could take some criminal matters into their own hands, and suffer no consequences for such action. For example, there were times when
an individual had a clear right to protect themselves, their families, and their possessions, by killing an offender. Nobody thought twice of such action. Today, however, we live in a
more civilized society that understands, from a moral standpoint, that we do not necessarily have the right to take the life of another. Now, while there seem to be
circumstances where capital punishment makes the greatest sense, such as the abuse and murder of children, in other cases it seems all but ridiculous to think we, as a society,
have the right to take the life of another. And, it is in this perspective that we see the vague and allusive nature of capital punishment which makes us ask
of ourselves, "Do we really ever have the right?" In the following paper we present an examination of capital punishment, and then discuss the beliefs on both sides of the
issue. Capital Punishment As one author notes, "Over the past few years, the nation has grappled with a number of moral and practical questions related to capital punishment" (Anonymous
