meet the demand of items needed to be transported. As a result, a growing number of trucking companies have been forced into bankruptcy while many others have been left
scrambling to adequately address these issues before supply considerations adversely affect their profitability and cash flow. The primary causes of capacity issues include a decrease in the number of
truck drivers throughout the industry as a result of inadequate pay for long hours on the road and away from families and the lack of benefits some financially strapped carriers
are unable to provide. Furthermore, trucking companies are grappling with how to contend with tough government emissions standards and are also finding it more difficult to secure credit because
banks are wary about the growing number of industry bankruptcies. In addition, with the cost of fuel at an all-time high, carriers often hesitate to add capacity and drivers
unless a lucrative financial return on their investment is practically guaranteed. Roger Morton considered what trucking companies are doing to address these capacity issues in his article All the right
answers published in Logistics Today in 2005. Focusing upon two companies in particular - PolyOne Corporation and Cargill Meat Solutions - Morton was able to denote a general proactive
response within the industry as a whole. PolyOnes corporate logistics director Steve Feliccia freely admits that despite his $2 billion company being one of the foremost polymer suppliers it
