requires a group to nominate an individual for canonization to the local bishop (Lim and Lau, n.d.; Beccari, 1907). The Bishop then initiates the Ordinary Process, subsequently recommending the individual
to the Vatican (Lim and Lau, n.d). There was a traditional practice that the individual had to be dead for at least 50 years before this process could begin, however,
in recent decades, the wait is more like five years (Lim and Lau, n.d). Even this unwritten rule has exceptions, most recently with the canonization process of Mother Teresa (Lim
and Lau, n.d). Very shortly after her death, Cardinal Roger Mahony, from Los Angeles, submitted her name to Rome and recommended that the five-year rule be waived (Lim and Lau,
n.d). The Pope accommodated this request in March 1999 (Lim and Lau, n.d). The next phase is called the Informative Phase (Lim and Lau, n.d). When the candidate is approved
by the Vatican, a "Postulator" is appointed; this person will interview as many people who knew the candidate as possible (Lim and Lau, n.d). Documents that include records of the
interviews, personal testimonials from those who knew the candidate as well as letters and any other writings from the candidate are collected in a huge portfolio (Lim and Lau, n.d).
The inquiring process is next and there are three kinds of inquiry processes: 1. Informative inquiries that address the reputation of the candidate for sanctity and miracles (Lim and
