new way of thinking emerging, but this fictitious view features the protagonist Candide in an extraordinary role. Candide goes through a variety of things, all the while remaining optimistic. The
author attempts to show the injustices of the society in which the character lives. In the authors own life, while for the most part he was treated well by the
monarchy, there were many times when Voltaire was at odds with the Ancien regime. He almost seems to have a love-hate relationship with the powers that be in France, but
certainly this is not uncommon. Even the poor would cling to the illusion of the perfect monarchy, something that of course would never materialize. In any event, whatever one
wants to say about Voltaires comfort in France, there are some things which ring true. It is certain that Voltaire was entrenched in society at the time and while not
an objective observer, can convey the injustices that would prevail. At the root of it all, Voltaire saw evil in this society that he embraces to an extent. The work
Candide is essentially a satire that exposes evil, vices and shortcomings. To accomplish this, the author makes use of tools like irony and exaggeration. Voltaire (1947) is in fact sarcastic
and while the author is indirect in the way in which he writes, it seems that the points made are obvious. Voltaire (1947) seemingly wants to display evil in such
a way that the reader cares. For example, one character makes a speech which includes the following observation: "I have scarcely seen a town which does not seek the ruin
of a neighbouring town, nor a family that does not wish to exterminate some other family" (Voltaire, 1947, p.74). He views the life that people lived at the time as
