we simply tended our garden all would be well. Tend it we did and my childhood was happy. As a young man, however, I became enamoured of tales from the
New World where a new sort of nation had emerged from a long struggle with Great Britain. I heard tales of a nation where everyone was equal, where there were
no barons or aristocracy to oppress the people, and where opportunity existed around every corner. I knew that the New World was for me. The only question in my mind
was how to achieve this goal. The answer came in the form of a work contract. I could gain passage to America in exchange for my labor. My contract
was for a period of five years, which I calculated would pass quickly. Saying a tearful goodbye to my family, I boarded a ship for the New World, secure in
the knowledge that my future would be assured of good fortune. Unfortunately, I was ignorant of the accepted practices of indentured servitude. Rather than being treated equitably, my master, a
Virginia planter, required that I labor from before sunup to after sundown in his cotton fields. It was back-breaking work under a sweltering sun and the air was full of
mosquitoes and pestilence. I soon came down with a dire fever. I recovered, but was weak from the ordeal. During my recovery, my master graciously permitted me to work a
