the Iraq War and my marriage. Though these are three very different accomplishments, each one defined specific changes in my life and helped me create personal goals and an
expectation of achievement. When I entered college, I felt that I had chosen a necessary path. College would be the educational basis through which I could achieve all
of what I desired, and would set the stage for my future development. What I realized, though, was that college was a major stepping stone; college was just the
beginning of my lifetime focus on learning. My college experience itself was difficult, primarily because of my overall lack of parental support and because of a lack of
direction from the beginning. My family did not place a great significance on educational achievement, and so I was not encouraged to pursue a college education. At the
same time, I placed considerable pressure on myself because I would be the first person in my immediate family to have attended and graduated from college, and I placed incredible
significance on achieving a diploma. Regardless of my lack of family support for education, I believed that achieving a college degree was important. Though there were financial restrictions
that limited my choices of college and my ADD diagnosis, which further made college learning a challenge, I proudly accepted my degree in English from Clemson University. At
Clemson, I also met the woman who would become my wife. Over the past decade, "Betty" has been an inspiration to me and has shown me how to work
towards a family base, one that Ive never had before. We have experienced a number of struggles, from financial difficulties to balance work and relationship, but I have steadily
