sandwiches with. However, it seems that towards the end of 1998, enough alfalfa sprouts had been found to be contaminated with salmonella and E. coli that the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that people in certain high risk groups, including those with cancer, should stay away from the sprout (Burros,1998). Not only had people been loading
up on bean sprouts as a health food, and a way to ward off cancer, but anything with fiber had been consumed by individuals who feared such diseases as colon
cancer. But a recent study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found the belief that a high-fiber diet can protect one against colon and rectal cancers may be
wrong (Emery, 1999). The theory that colon and rectal cancer can be thwarted by a high fiber diet dates back to the early seventies when researchers noted that Africans, who
had consumed high fiber diets, were hardly affected by such types of cancers (1999). Other research had backed up the notion but the recent study had been more extensive than
previous research which relied on less credible data (1999). An editorial in the Journal by Dr. John Potter concluded that experts do not really know much about the relationship
between certain types of food and cancers (Emery, 1999). In exploring dietary recommendations for people with cancer of the colon or liver, there are some studies that do point
to foods as being contributory to good health. For example, studies have shown that fresh grapes and grape products do have properties which may reduce the incidences of cancer of
the breast, colon, and liver ("Cancer Prevention," 1998).Other insights have been made concerning a relationship between foods and cancer. According to 1996 Dietary Guidelines provided by the American Cancer Society,
