shampoo. Tom, 43, had been in a car accident a month ago. He was ventilator-dependent, comatose and with a tomography scan that showed extensive brain damage (Bridgetts, 2001). Toms organs
were failing and his condition was very unstable, therefore, Bridgetts approached performing personal care for Tom tentatively and with care. However, on this day, his vital signs were stable, so
she recounts how she went ahead and washed, rinsed and untangled his hair. The next day, Lynn, Toms wife, was teary-eyed as she informed Bridgetts of her decision to take
Tom off the ventilator. She told Bridgetts that "Tom was a vibrant man...Hed be horrified and humiliated o be kept alive mechanically--unfeeling and unmoving" (2001, p. HN5). Lynn did not
want a priest or a minister present, but she did want Bridgetts support. Tom breathed his last as Bridgetts stroked his arm and his wife lovingly stroked his hair (2001).
Bridgetts records that as she stood there watching Lynn stroke her husbands clean hair, "I was overwhelmed...with what it sometimes means to be a nurse" (2001, p. HN5). To
this writer/tutor, this story exemplifies what it means to be a nurse. Bridgetts performed her duty of care, both for Tom and his wife. Privately and personally, she may
have had ethical reservations about taking a patient off of life support, but she did not add to Lynns burden by interfering with a decision that was hers and Toms
to make. Lynn felt certain that Toms wishes would be to be taken off the ventilator and she carried those wishes out. Bridgetts provided nursing care --including washing Toms hair
