lived in the early 20th century. She was Canadian, and spent much of her time among the Aboriginal peoples of that nation. The articles main theme is the
fact that later scholars have accused Carr of failing to address a very important social issue: the relationship between the Canadian government and its native peoples. Cole defends Carr,
saying that she was essentially conservative and not truly aware of social issues; further, its clear from her work that she was very supportive of the native peoples. He
describes her paintings, her writings, and her relationships with various individuals. He also answers charges made against Carr to the effect that she saw the Indians as relics of
the past, not as real people with a present and future. Untrue, he claims-Carr did mourn the passing of the old ways, but she was wise enough not to
"assume that Aboriginal peoples would necessarily disappear" (Cole, p. 158). In the end, she seems to have given a balanced picture of the tribes. Cole writes in a straightforward,
narrative style, though somewhat scholarly. It would be nice if he gave a bit more of Carrs biography before he launches into the piece, because those who dont know
who she was will be lost. His sources (cited in footnotes) include scholarly articles and books, and Carrs own journals. His method is to study the attacks made
on Carr, and refute them. This article seems incomplete and inconclusive; its merely one writers opinion added to all the other opinions about Carr. It might have profited from
