Nations peoples find themselves at severe disadvantage in many distinct regards when compared with other Canadians. Like most of the other indigenous peoples in the world, Canadas First Peoples
have suffered considerably as a result of societal misunderstandings, discrimination, misguided policies and counterproductive laws. Their interaction with the Canadian government over time has been particularly reprehensible. One
of the most concerning problems facing these peoples is their less-than-positive relationship with the criminal justice system. This relationship is tied to a number of factors influencing First Nations history
and culture, the severe poverty which engulfs them, and associated problems like drug and alcohol abuse. There is no contesting the fact that
First Nations peoples in Canada have more than their share of interactions with the countrys criminal justice system. Some of these interactions are just but some are tainted by
many injustices. Crime, however, is a very real problem for Canadas aboriginal peoples. Analyzing recent statistics from Canadian Criminal Justice Association, Canada and the World Backgrounder (4) reports
