paper examines the authors thesis, provides a summary of the content of the article, assesses the sources in the article and then provides a personal opinion of the worth of the article. Thesis In the beginning Dales indicates that the nation of Canada is often seen as something that is all but helpless or childlike. He states that a common assumption is that "In Canada infant industries are not expected to grow up" (Dales; 8). He claims that this is wrong, stating, "It seems to me to be subversive not only of the nations wealth but also of the nations pride" (Dales; 9). In essence, his thesis is that Canada is not a nation that is helpless or childlike, but rather a nation that goes about economic growth in a different way. Content Dales first indicates that the nation aims, like many other counties, at increasing the gross national product of the nations purse and not the individual gross national product. He associates this focus with the demands placed upon Canada in the 1800s when Canada had little option but to adopt their particular policy if they were to survive against the United States high tariffs on manufactured goods. He illustrates that the national policies did not really work for twenty to thirty years. In this we see where he is going with illustrating how attacking the system of the nation is attacking the patriotism of the nation and the pride. He illustrates how people did not want to admit that the policies were a failure, and this supports the notion that the nation was bound and determined to focus on their own methods.
