Canadas Supreme Court has struggled with a backlog of cases, in fact, since the implementation of the Charter (Macfarlane, 2009). Understanding the many issues that have surfaced
requires an examination of the Canadian history as a whole. Since the 1960s in particular, however, there has been a stepped up drive to institute mechanisms that protected the
basic rights of Canadian citizens. Groups like he British Columbia Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA), the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), the Ligue des droits de lhomme (LDH), and the
Newfoundland-Labrador Human Rights Association (NLHRA) have persistently worked towards change (Hayday, 2009). The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is just one example of the outcome. It is
likely that the drive to better delineate Canadian rights and freedoms will continue well into the future. Understanding human rights and civil liberties in Canada requires understanding that a diversity
