There are many stakeholders for a business, the shareholders may be called as the primary stakeholders in financial terms, but a firm would loose business if it did not consider other stakeholders, such as customers. When seeking ways of improving performance in the past the use of tools to increase efficiently and profit have taken priority. However, it is also becoming increasingly apparent that pursuing a sustainable development policy can enhance strategy and satisfy numerous stakeholders. There is no single definition to apply to the term sustainable development. It can be interpreted as meaning that as any consumption will mean the use of some resources, many of which may not be replaceable, so the use of non replaceable resources or resources that damage the environment will not be defined as sustainable development with ecocentric this approach (Eckersley, 1992). If we apply this then it is almost impossible for any business so satisfy the criteria of sustainable development (Eckersley, 1992). Alternatively, the definition given by the Bruntdland report that it is the ability to Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future (WCED, 1987 quoted in Purser et al, 1995) sustainable development becomes a realistic proposition to aim for. The use of this type of approach can result in both short and long term benefits result in direct and indirect financial benefits.
