for instance; or perhaps the event we are witnessing is so appalling that we simply do not want to believe it. The attack on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon is one such incident. If the student wants to discuss the terrorist attack and his/her immediate reaction that this could not be happening, then its necessary to ignore
all the subsequent tapes of the attacks and the numerous reconstructions, and go back to the first moment when he became aware that something awful was happening. Most of us
saw it on television, so well begin there. Its probable that the student tuned in when the first tower was burning, because thats when most of the coverage started. At
that point no one knew what was happening; an attack of any kind was the last thing on our minds. Most people probably believed that somehow a tragic fire had
started high in the building, which in itself would have been enough to bring people into the streets. The crowd was staring up at the tower when there was another
shock and the second tower exploded. People held their arms above their heads and ducked down, but we still had no idea that it was an attack. The images were
of masses of people, dazed, looking at the burning buildings. But the real horror was still to come, as the people trapped on the upper floors had to make a
