grow by organising and co-ordinating the efforts of employees to a single goal. However, the workplace has changed, becoming more dynamic, requiring companies to change and adapt at an increasing
speed. To this end Handy has argued that instead of the bureaucratic structure we are more likely to see team based structure emerge. Moreover, the lack of clarity and greater
ambiguity that can emerge in team bases structures which accompany the flexibility, may also reduce the potential of this as a structure for large organisations. However, with new industries emerging,
the need for new structures is also increasing. The bureaucratic organisations may be seen as a slow and lumber animal sow to make
decisions and top heavy with management, but this is a dated idea of a bureaucracy. In the modern commercial world there has been an evolution, the flattening of organisational hierarchies
retain a bureaucratic structure but also change the shape; lessening the layers within the hierarchy. When looking at whether team based structures can
take over from the bureaucratic structures we need to consider how these newer bureaucratic structures that are now more able to balance the constraints with flexibility. Organisations that demonstrate this
include companies such as Rover and Xerox as well as the National Health Service where there are fewer managers and increased bottom line staff. However, the bureaucratic style is still
reflected in the structures and the decision making process. If we wish to consider an alterative we need to look at the way in which team based structures may offer
