is this man, Patrice Meursault. His crime certainly smacks of deeply felt emotion. Once the man he perceived as a knife-wielding assailant was incapacitated by his first shot, Meursault proceeded to empty the weapon in to the body of the prostrate Arab. However, in contrast to such passion, it has been brought out by the police investigation that this is a man who seems to be incapable of feeling anything very deeply. He is an enigma whose reactions seem inhumanly detached. For example, when he found out that his mother had died, the defendant is known to have commented that "Mother died today. Or maybe it was yesterday. I dont know. I received a telegram from the rest home (Camus 1). This is hardly a typical reaction to such news. Immediately, it raises the question of what sort of man is this? Certainly, he is a man without deep feeling or compassion. When asked why he did not go to visit his mother with regularity, he commented, "It would have meant losing my Sunday" (Camus 4). At this mothers funeral, witnesses have testified that he showed no emotion or grief. After the murder on the beach, investigators questioned Meursault concerning his lack of feeling towards his mothers death. He replied that he had "rather lost the habit of noting" his feelings and, therefore, "hardly knew what to answer" (Camus 80). He also related that he was rather embarrassed by a woman at the funeral who made a noisy show of her grief. Meursault admitted, however, to some emotion in relation to his mothers death. He confessed to investigators that he would rather enjoyed the trip to the country for the funeral, "if it hadnt been for Mother" (Camus 14).
