the lives of his students, as he and his students collectively created "alternative communitarian spaces conducive to their capacities for self-definition, resistance and social empowerment" (Campano, 2007, p. xv).
This text offers the reader also a narrative account of Campanos teaching career that is quite personal. In the opening chapter, he relates how he began to perceive of the
"ethnic immigrant narrative as a research method" (Campano, 2007, p. 13). As this suggests, Campano uses narratives throughout his text, as he intertwines stories of his students lives and stories
drawn from his own life. This creates a collaborative effort, with his students, which succeeds in establishing a climate for learning that fits the circumstances and needs of Campanos students.
Campano states that his main research question, which was "What would happen if I invited children from immigrant and migrant backgrounds to read, write and speak from
their own experiences and the realities of their lives" (Campano, 2007, p. 31). To illustrate his points, Campano relates the story of Carmen, an immigrant student whom the school treats
as a "reluctant learner," that is someone in need of intensive remedial education (Campano, 2007, p. 32). In contrast to this perception, the author shows Carmen to be a
child with immense social capabilities and skill, and someone capable of discussing weighty issues, such as the colonization of the Philippines. Campano relates the conversations he had with Carmens
father, and he began to gain a social picture not only of Carmen, but of other families in the neighborhood as well. He goes on to describe how the process
