have varying impacts on a presidential campaign depending on levels of contribution and their sources and the positive or negative aspects of media coverage. In elections over the last
20 years, both campaign contributions and media coverage have had an impact on the election process. What must be recognized when considering the influence of factors like the media is
that the mass media itself is more influential than it has ever been in the past. Access to news and information immediately provides a more concrete and distinct means
of viewing presidential candidates and can define the "slant" by which these candidates are assessed. For example, some say that democratic candidates like Michael Dukakis, a solid and well-supported
democratic contender, and Walter Mondale failed to succeed in their bids for the presidency based on their physical appearance and their lack of "charisma" presented through the television media.
In contrast, though, Ronald Reagan, actor-turned-politician, was a strong candidate who successfully determined his bid for the presidency as a result of his charismatic nature and the presentation of his
"ideal" stature in the television news media. At the same time, campaign contributions have also determined a substantial basis from which candidates are able to pursue their campaign, and sets
the basis for the introduction of everything from print advertising to television advertising, that promote the candidates exposure and presence across the country. In recent years, though, the call
for campaign finance reform has also impacted the view of candidates. More than the money itself, the question of the ethics of campaign contributions has clearly determined the focus
