Existing research assesses the views of both employers and employees, as well as the legal and ethical implications of the use of cameras and surveillance measures in the workplace.
Nature and Importance of the literature The existing research raises the question: Have
employers gone too far in the name of security? The use of cameras to track employee behavior and the use of surveillance of computer communications are part of the
view that employers have the right to maintain certain practices in the workplace to ensure protection of their own interests. Part of the overall and encompassing problem the use
of cameras is that there is no definitive law which stipulates that the practice is or isnt allowable. A persons right to privacy apparently only covers companies that are not
privately owned or ones own home. Otherwise, those employees who find themselves working for a privately owned business may be subjected to a whole host of indignities, including cameras in
the restrooms and the monitoring of electronic communications. Many employers, however, believe that they are fully justified in the usage of the surveillance cameras, both visible and hidden. Employers
claim that they lose thousands of dollars each year due to employee theft, drug use, or an inappropriate use of their time while on the job. Most employers have invested
