and Nausicaa, a mortal maiden. In the following paper we present an overview of each woman and then offer a comparison and contrast of the two. Calypso In
Book I of the story we see the gods discussing how to get Ulysses back home, for he has been stuck on Calypsos island for many years. the gods are
discussing how Ulysses is the only man to have escaped death yet still be stuck: "So now all who escaped death in battle or by shipwreck had got safely home
except Ulysses, and he, though he was longing to return to his wife and country, was detained by the goddess Calypso, who had got him into a large cave and
wanted to marry him. (Book I). They decide to go to Calypso and tell her she must give Ulysses up. When Calypso was confronted with the request she "trembled with
rage," stating, "You gods...ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You are always jealous and hate seeing a goddess take a fancy to a mortal man, and live with him in
open matrimony" (Book V). She illustrates how she found him after all alone and shipwrecked and states, "I got fond of him and cherished him, and had set my heart
on making him immortal, so that he should never grow old all his days; still I cannot cross Jove, nor bring his counsels to nothing; therefore, if he insists upon
it, let the man go beyond the seas again; but I cannot send him anywhere myself for I have neither ships nor men who can take him" (Book V). She
