the Gospels, as well as the methods by which Jesus prepared the disciples for their role. One of the first motifs found in the Gospels is in Mark 1:16-20,
which recounts how Jesus called "Simon and his brother Andrew," stating that he would make them fishers of men (Stein, 1996, p. 114). Another motif is evident in the number
of the intimate group that surrounded Jesus, i.e., twelve, which for a Jewish population conjures associations with the twelve tribes of Israel. Therefore, the calling of the twelve was a
"symbolic act that demonstrated visually what he proclaimed verbally" (Stein, 1996, p. 115). One of the ways in which Jesus prepared his disciples for the role of leading a
new religion was to teach them to abandon the cognitive framework that they had each developed as an adult male. In one of he most astounding reversals recorded in biblical
teaching, Jesus taught his disciples that they must abandon the authority and status that they enjoyed as adults and become humble and trusting like children (Leyda, 2007). He instructs his
disciples and others in Matthew 18:3-4, saying "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then
humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Leyda, 2007, p. 322). The Greek verb "tapeinosel" is used in Matthew 18:4 and this
word means literally to "cause something to be lowered or to reduce another persons status or importance" (Leyda, 2007, p. 322). There is the connotation in Greek that this lowering
