society, or community, in the South Seas, courage is considered to be the most important thing. It is something the boy lacks. He is afraid of the ocean and yet
he lives on an island. The following paper presents a book report on this particular book. Call it Courage The boy in this story is Mafatu and he
is afraid of the ocean even though he lives on an island. He fears the ocean because his mother was killed by the sea. The people he lives with make
their living in the ocean, and so he knows that he cannot fear the ocean forever. He is a brave and smart boy for knowing that his fears are not
good, and for actually going out of his way to get rid of those fears. In the beginning of the book we see how courage is an important thing
to his people. "They worshipped courage, those early Polynesians" (Sperry 7). This is because they had to go out on the ocean and find food and the very first Polynesians
had to travel the sea to these islands, a very dangerous thing to do. Mafatu knows this because it is a very important thing to his people. Mafatu makes the
decision that he will go on an adventure and seek his own courage. He is a very brave boy for even beginning this journey because he is doing something that
he is incredibly fearful of, and nobody is making him do it. He knows that he must face his fears and win if he wants to be a man. We
might think that this story is only about Mafatu overcoming his fears of the ocean, but in his journeys he comes across many things that are far more scary than
