The twenty-first century offers a vast array of recruiting opportunities well beyond the restrictive nature of classified ads, flyers and temp agencies; rather, the Internet has added a vast and
expansive availability for recruitment that allows potential employees from several cities - and even states - away to apply for and land the job. Minimum skill requirements for a customer
service agent include being well versed about the particular product or service for which calls will be taken. A pleasant and friendly tone is necessary when addressing all callers
but especially when they are calling with a problem. Basic computer skills (typing, moving from window to window) and familiarity with a word processing program is required; additional training
will accompany specific software used at the center. While the service representative works primarily on a one-on-one basis with callers, he or she must also have the ability to
work within a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication is a must where both callers and coworkers are concerned. While some call centers hire people without previous
experience in this line of work, many require at least six months previous experience because of the "strict guidelines for fielding calls" (Jacques, 2005) the client requires. Bilingual skills
are always a benefit. Motivating staff who are working holidays and/or weekends is not as difficult an objective as many believe it to be. Holidays come with their own
built-in motivation with time-and-a-half or double-time pay, so service representatives receive their inspiration at the next pay period. Weekends can be more relaxed in both attire and other weekday
requirements: Employees can come dressed in casual clothes, the center may spring for ice cream or some other comfort food treat or workers might be permitted to work an eight-hour
