1848, a time when gold was discovered there (Miller & Faux, 1997). President James Polk would provoke a war with Mexico that would exist between 1846 and 1848 (Tolson, 2003).
It was something that was supported with the idea of Manifest Destiny (Tolson, 2003). That war took California, in addition to a good part of the southwest,
from Mexico (Tolson, 2003). It was a time of great expansion for Americans, and while the majority of people were "gung ho" on the idea, the nation had its
share of critics. Some of the policys harshest critics were literary giants like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (Tolson, 2003). Why? Tolson (2003) explains: "The spread of slavery
into the new territories was certainly a great concern, but another was the conviction that imperial acquisitions violated the spirit of the nations republican ideals" (p.35). Indeed, seizing property unfairly
would take its toll psychologically. Still, it is perhaps its unsavory beginnings that would fuel the economy and create a population that was restless and hungry for change. The concept
of manifest destiny, and advent of the California Gold rush, to some extent, helps to explain why the west in general is so diverse. It is important to note that
California, at the time the gold rush started, was not a state. Like many other territories on the northern American continent, it was captured and drawn into the great United
States. The Americans did expand with an almost religious fervor under the ideology known as manifest destiny. It is an important part of Californias unique history. Unlike the settlers
in the East who came from England and other parts of Europe, those who settled in California would come from Mexico, or Asia, or the Eastern United States. In effect,
