is clearly a form of substance abuse that can ruin the lives of many people. While it is a problem that is rampant across the nation, and perhaps across many
parts of the world, it also seems as though different states have differing levels of users, or abusers. The following paper provides and examination of alcoholism as well as a
look at California and its use of alcohol and problems with alcoholism. California and Alcoholism Alcohol abuse, and use, has long
been a reality throughout history. Since the creation of wines and other alcoholic beverages many cultures have seen problems. As such it comes as no surprise that the United States
has many problems with the substance. According to one author substance abuse is actually the largest health problem in the nation (Perkinson, 2007). This of course also takes into consideration
the substance abuse involved with various drugs, not just alcohol. But, being that alcohol is lumped together with all drug substances one can well assume that alcohol is just as
serious, if not more so, of a problem considering it a legal substance. This particular author also provides the following statistics regarding substance abuse, including alcohol and alcoholism: "Over a
lifetime, 27% of the population will suffer from a substance abuse disorder....Ninety five percent of alcoholics die of their disease, approximately 26 years earlier than their normal life expectancy. Heavy
drinking contributes to illnesses in each of the top three causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke" (Perkinson, 2007). The author
