many ways a mirror of U.S. federal government. Both are representative democracies. In this form of government individuals are elected by their fellow citizens to serve in the
passage of laws and other governmental matters. Our federal government and California state government alike also share the characteristic of having three branches of government (California State Capital).
These branches are: 1. the judicial branch, 2. the legislative branch, and 3. the executive branch (California State Capital).
The legislative branch of California state government is an excellent example of shared power in the political system. That branch is charged with the passage of laws.
It in itself, however, is fragmented into two distinct units: the California State House of Representatives and the California State Senate. These two congressional bodies share the
responsibility of law formulation. The judicial branch is composed of the Supreme Court while the executive branch encompasses the office of the governor. While Californias Congress passes laws,
the executive division enforces those laws, and the judicial division interprets them and reviews their Constitutional legality (Tannahill and Bedichek 37). There is, therefore, an exemplary system of checks
and balances incorporated into the California state government just as is the case with the U.S. federal government. California has what
is called a "plural executive", for example. In other words the executive branch of state government consists of eight separate elected offices (Kouser). As a consequence, key positions
such as the Lt. Governor, the Treasurer, and the Controller do not serve the governor (Kouser). Californias governor is limited in his powers in other ways as well.
