September 9, 1850. However, the territory was settled by a variety of different peoples over the last 9,000 years. In fact, Native Americans, Europeans, Mexicans, Canadians, Russians and Polynesians all
once stepped foot on what is now known as California. During the Mexican War of Independence, Mexico gained independence from Spain. This included most of California excluding the northern part
of the state. As foreigners began settling in northern California, they began making their way south to warmer climates and in the 1830s and 1840s they began rebelling against Mexican
rule. In 1846, the Mexican-American War began and it didnt take long (less than a year actually) for the Americans to gain control of California (excluding Baja). In February of
1848, Mexico and the United States signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war. Whats significant is a few days earlier, gold had been discovered near Sacramento. This
led to the Gold Rush in which thousands of people made their way west seeking "treasure." As more people began settling in California, the need for a civil government began
to arise and the residents started to call for statehood. With the issue of slavery at the forefront, the U.S. Congress decided to allow California to enter into the Union
in 1850 as a free, non-slave state. Its first capital was located in San Jose yet due to unsuitable facilities and infrastructure problems where rain turned dirt roads into muddy
