USS Sterett does convey the sights, sounds, and feelings of being in battle due to the fact that Calhoun was there. This author served aboard the USS Sterett during World
War II, from 1939 to 1943, when he was wounded. His stirring account of those years is recorded in his text Tin Can Sailor: Life Aboard the USS Sterett, 1939-1945.
In writing this account, Calhoun not only relies on his own memory, but he also interviewed officers and enlisted men, as well as consulted action reports, ship logs and
diaries. The result is an action-packed text that gives the reader a real "feel" for what it was like to serve aboard a destroyer during WWII. This book is
a true-life adventure narrative that portrays the reality of battles, closely and intensely fought. For example, Calhoun recounts the action that the Sterett encountered during the Third Battle of
Savo Island, which earned a Presidential Unit Citation. During this battle, the Sterett directly confronted a battleship, a cruiser and a destroyer (Calhoun, 2000). But while Calhoun writes of exemplary
heroism and bravery, there is no feeling that he is bragging or presenting the Sterett crew of entirely composed of heroes. Rather, he simply presents the facts in a gripping,
detailed-filled manner and allows this account to speak for itself. Consequently, many passages are quite moving as the reader feels the pain of the author in remembering the death of
