Giltman 6/2010 Please There are many similarities as well as many differences between the two ancient cities of Cairo, Egypt and Jerusalem, Israel. Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in Africa as well as the Arab World. Cairos history dates back many centuries and it is often associated with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx in the neighboring town of Giza. With a population of nearly 7 million people inside the city center and an additional 10 million people just outside the city center, Cairo ranks as one of the largest urban areas in the entire world. Cairo, as well as the rest of Egypt, is predominantly Muslim with a small percentage of Jews and Christians scattered throughout the country. In fact, 80 to 90 percent of the population belongs to the Sunni branch of Islam (Cairo Religion, 2010). Christians make up for 10 to 20 percent of the population. Most of the Christians in Cairo belong to Coptic Orthodox Church. Others are strict adherents of Coptic Evangelical Church and Coptic Catholic Church. A handful of Jews still live in Cairo today, and are mainly followers of Judaism. However, most of the Jews have made their way to Israel or the United States and only few can still be found in Cairo and Egypt.
