themselves from this natural menace. Bibliography lists 9 sources. SA144cad.rtf I. Introduction Cadmium is an element that appears naturally, and comes from the earths crust ("Cadmium"
PG). It is generally found as a mineral that may be combined with other elements like oxygen to form cadmium oxide or with chlorine to evolve into cadmium chloride (PG).
It may also combine with sulfur to yield cadmium sulfate or cadmium sulfide (PG). All soils as well as rocks, including coal and mineral fertilizers, do possess some form
of cadmium (PG). Most cadmium used in the United States is extracted with other metals such as zinc, lead, and copper (PG). Cadmium does not corrode easily and has many
uses which includes batteries, pigments, plastics and metal coatings (PG). Presently, there are scientific uncertainties in respect to key transfers of
cadmium through the food chain and this can alter an accurate assessment of human health risks ("Cadmium" PG). However, the concept of problems with cadmium have not been ignored.
Such concerns have been voiced over the past twenty-year or so and early issues had been the assessment and management of acute injury to human health in respect to
occupational exposure(PG). This would generally pertain to hazardous working conditions. Some of these hazards were found in smelting and plating industries (PG).
After this was found to be true, it was followed by a focus on the dispersal of cadmium from industrial point sources and local populations through a variety of
