There are a number of perspectives when it comes to CYA in the workplace; however, no matter if it is with regard to human relations, human resources, cultural, systems or classical, it can be argued that an effective paper trail is one of the surest processes to render a wrongful accusation as being unwarranted. "You cant be covered enough in terms of documentation and a paper trail" (Beck, 1997, p. e3556032.htm). Indeed, without proper and accurate documentation of past events that have occurred, there is no way for employees -- or employers -- to defend themselves against discrimination or wrongful termination. This paper trail need not be anything sophisticated; rather, it only has to be a clear and careful accounting of conversations, memos and any other pertinent information that has to deal directly with the issue at hand. Accurate documentation not only helps protect the employee, but it also serves as a backbone when employers decide to fire someone.
