Times have changed, however. More people are coming into the country with different ideas about health care, food and grief customs. Though this combines for a
wonderful and diverse melting pot in the United States, which is as it should be, it can create a challenge for health care providers that are treating different ethic and
cultural populations. While the Chinese respect and revere their doctors, and would consider it the highest insult to question his findings, immigrants
from Latin America tend to have a healthy distrust of medical care. In other words, health care workers these days must not only treat the problem or disease, but must
do so in a way that wont offend or frighten a variety of different cultures and backgrounds. This is a tall order, but it can be dealt with.
In this paper, well examine the situation at Holy Redeemer Home Care, a health care facility that doesnt have specific or established standards for
culturally competent care. Well examine what the literature has to say about such standards and, with this background, and an understanding of the challenges faced by Holy Redeemer, will make
