the top floors of the Asch building could not have known that this day would be their last. What makes their deaths more tragic and a solemn reminder even to
today is the fact that these deaths were needless and senseless. Though the owners of the company did not push them to their deaths, nor intend for a fire to
claim nearly three hundred lives, they are, nonetheless, guilty of gross negligence, dehumanizing conditions, and lack of compassion for their fellow human beings. Though not legally liable for the disaster
that occurred (at least in the early 1900s in New York) it is with a certainty that they are morally responsible. The events
of a normal workday conspired to add to the factors that make this tragedy the companys fault. Most of the women who were employed by this company were Jewish and
of immigrant status. Most of the women were very young, none of them being older than twenty-five, according to most accounts. This became factor number one. These girls were newly
come to American shores. Employed at slave labor wages, the owners deliberately took advantage of the fact that these women were young, penniless, and did not speak the language nor
understand the customs of the US. As such, then, the company took advantage of their youth and their impoverished conditions to exploit them for their labor.
Secondly, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company determined that the women were not being productive enough and determined that the way to make them more productive was to make
certain that they women were not allowed to leave the room. To accomplish this task they locked the doors. When the fire broke out, these women were effectively handed a
