However, this has worked so well, to the benefit of both countries, many on Capital Hill have argued for a total lifting of the ban on trade with Cuba. AREAS OF TRADE: Cuba, which is roughly the size of Ohio, is a tremendously untapped resource for the United States. Though they may not agree with her humanitarian or philosophical policies, many other countries, notably, most of the European countries, China, and the Soviet Block countries. Perhaps the United States has been viewing the situation from the wrong perspective. The idea, of course, was to force or punish Cuba for its lack of human rights efforts and because their communistic government was as diametrically diverse from Democracy as one could get. However, what perhaps should have been taken into consideration is how a countrys philosophical outlooks could be influenced by trade and free exchange of ideas. If the United States true reason were to bring democracy to the people of Cuba, then perhaps isolating them from the rest of the world, was not the best ploy. Cuba, with its tropical climate has large mineral base which includes cobalt, nickel, iron ore, copper, manganese, salt, timber, and silica(Cuba, 2002). Most of what is exported at present time is sugar, tourism, seafood, tobacco and nickel. The most important commodity would have to tourism, based on how many people take advantage of its white sand beaches. It can be said that most of Cuba is still an agricultural Mecca and that in some parts of the world, Cuba is their largest exporter of agricultural goods.
