the authors point out that developing in thinking is a gradual process that combine somewhat frustrating plateaus with a lot of hard work. Basically, they note, changing habits and thinking
isnt something that can just be willed; its a long process that occurs during a period of years (rather than simply weeks or months). While Paul and Elder discuss mainly
general aspects of critical thinking, its interesting to apply these same aspects to management and managerial communication. First, the authors point out
that people (specifically students) dont travel though the stages of critical thinking unless they believe there are serious problems in their thinking and they begin regular practice. As an aside,
the authors point out that these stages are 1) the unreflective thinker; 2) the challenged thinker; 3) the beginning thinker; 4) the practicing thinker; 5) the advanced thinker and 6)
the master thinker. Most managers can probably relate to the frustration of trying to train employees out of old habits, or
trying to encourage them toward new ones. Basically, its as Paul and Elder said - no employees going to move in that direction unless he or she believes theres a
problem with his/her thinking. So basically, instead of trying to change the habits of such employees, the manager might do better by working to change the employees thinking. Instead of
focusing on, for example, the fact that an employee is chronically late, it might be useful to focus instead on the thought processes that employee is going through when it
