to bridge the gap between those who fought in a war that was not supported by most of the population, nor its soldiers, and of the significant sacrifices that they made. Those sacrifices are still a legacy to the families of the men who returned home, not the boys that went to war. Tim Obriens book, The Things that they Carried as well as William Saroyans, Resurrection of a Life offer insight into the mindset and the impact of war on a soldier. When Tim OBrien received his draft notice in 1968, though he opposed the war, he reported for duty and was sent to Vietnam. What he experienced there, as a young man, seemed to grant him a perspective on the war from both the standpoint of an idealist, and from the standpoint of a writer. What he apparently experienced there affected the way he and a whole generation perceived life, love and the American pursuit of happiness. In his book, The Things They Carried, this influence and perspective are most evident. The Things They Carried is unique in that the narrative is not the standard type. It has no discernable beginning and no discernable ending, just like the war. It is written in a style that makes the reader feel as if he or she is sitting in some small caf? and OBrien is telling you his personal recollection of his time in Vietnam. One of the very first elements is the idea of a person carrying things, as the title suggests.
