Prospero comes as he has thrown a celebratory masque for his daughters upcoming wedding. He has forgotten himself and his ulterior motives, but then, he remembers and the gravity of
his situation is at hand. This passage juxtaposes reality with fantasy. In this passage, too, Prospero is stating that he does not want the totality of the awesome power which
he has come into. He states that all which he has created will be gone at the end of the play when he will discard his magic book. The
book itself is symbolic, it has to be thought, of Prosperos secret desire to remove himself from reality and the world all together. In fact, the audience has learned over
the course of the first Act that Prosperos attention to studying and books were what left him vulnerable to attack in the first place. And yet, it is a double
edged sword. It is his happiness with study which has made him content, enough, to live on the island with his daughter Miranda and to make himself her tutor. The
