and internal scandal round out the seventies. All of this served to continue the growing trend of discontent and distrust of the government which eventually led to many crisis situations.
The Vietnam War was over, but its aftermath continued to divide the nation. Just at a time when the country most needed to turn to its leadership for a
strong role model, it was discovered that the President (whose reputation as a profession was as yet unsullied) had committed egregious violations of the law. During this time Roe
V Wade was tried in the courts and it a ruling in favor of Roe was declared. Domestically most of the minority groups, including homosexuals and women began to demand
equal pay and privileges. Affirmative action took its first tentative steps toward achieving this goal of equality. Then, in 1973, on the heels of Watergate, the United States placed an
embargo on the oil imported from the Arab countries. As a result the prices on gasoline soared. Long fuel lines began to form at the gas stations. This sent the
economy plummeting and was one of the major reasons for the recession which would hit the following year. Many of the reasons for the recession stemmed from the lack of
confidence that the American people had in their government at the time. They did not believe that the government had the power any longer to protect them against their enemies,
nor did the government act in the best interests of the American public. The resignations of several influential politicians, including the President guaranteed the outlook of the American public would
plummet. The oil embargo compounded the problem and with less to spend and less to save, the economy suffered. This was also a time when the first indications of
